The Spanish Government reiterates its support to the UfM

The future of the Euro-Mediterranean relations with regards to the new changes in the Arab World, were the main subjects of discussion between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Trinidad Jimenez and the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Youssef Amrani.
Madrid – During a working lunch held at the Palacio de Santa Cruz, the Minister and the Secretary General exchanged views on the need to give a new impetus to the Union for the Mediterranean, in the light of the changes taking place in the region. Secretary General Youssef Amrani informed the Minister that the Secretariat is preparing a document that proposes new areas of regional cooperation. The Minister and the Secretary General consider that political changes in some countries of the Mediterranean offer a unique opportunity to re-launch a regional partnership based on common governance. The Minister Trinidad Jimenez expressed her full support to the Secretariat and the role it can play as a joint institution to facilitate and support democratic transitions in the region.

Youssef Amrani expressed his gratitude to the Government of Spain for its continuous support to the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean. Spain has always been a core player in the Euro Mediterranean relations, since 1995 Barcelona Declaration.
